Note on the 2017 Autumn Show

Last year we gave local schools a number of daffodils, compost and a pot with to be grown and shown at the spring show
this year we gave the schools one potato tuber, the compost and a growing bag to be grown on for the Autumn show
there were two prizes, one for the heaviest crop won by Divine Savour and the other for the greatest number of tubers won by Breakspear School

We entered a potato growing competition in the spring. This was organised by the
Abbots Langley Gardening Society and local schools were invited to take part.
Schools were given one seed potato, compost and a grow bag. Winners of this
competition were announced at the Garden Society Autumn show on Saturday 9th
September 2017. I am pleased to say that Breakspeare School won first prize for the
number of potatoes grown. We grew twelve potatoes. Divine Savour received first
prize for the weight of their potatoes. We received a certificate, trophy and a
HTA National Garden Gift Card worth £5.00.

Luton Hoo
Wednesday 23rd May 2018
(Booking form)

The five-acre, octagonal Luton Hoo Walled Garden was designed by Lancelot
“Capability” Brown for John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, soon after he acquired the Estate in
1763. Former Prime Minister and an unofficial director of the Royal Botanic Gardens
Kew, his garden at Luton Hoo Estate contributed to his reputation as a noted botanist
and horticulturalist.
Successive owners of the Estate adapted the garden to match the changing fashions in
gardens over the years. Numerous heated glasshouses were built by the Leigh family in
the last quarter of the 19th century for the production of fruit and flowers, a few which
still survive today. The largest of the surviving glasshouses, built by the firm of
Mackenzie and Moncur for Sir Julius and Lady Wernher circa 1911, is evidence of the
extravagance of the Edwardian period.
The garden continued to be productive well into the 20th century, only to fall into
decline from the 1980s onwards. Now the focus of a fascinating project largely carried
out by an enthusiastic team of volunteers, the garden will be revived and its structures
repaired for the enjoyment of future generations.
