Despite the inclement weather Thursday night’s meeting was
a great success with nearly 70 members and friends attending to
enjoy this Christmas social evening and watch Graham Bailey demonstrating
wood turning. Graham is a local man and is well known to many of
our members.
Graham brought along a portable wood turning lathe (which was very
heavy and needed two people to carry it) into The Manor House for
the evening and showed how to produce a simple garden dibber. He
explained about the different type’s gouges and chisels he
uses and how the wood is held with the various types of chucks and
spigots needed to produce the bowls etc. During the demonstration
Graham answered many questions from the audience and there was a
lot of interest in what he was doing.
After the demonstration Graham spent a lot of time talking to individual
members about wood turning and showing a variety of items he had
made ranging from bowls to pens and earring stands which were all
for sale.

After the wood turning it was time to tuck-in to the refreshments
provided by the society with some kind donations by members and
take part in the quiz and guessing game devised by Jo and Jane.
There was also a sparkly waistcoat and fancy tie contest for the
men won by Keith Gissing in his silver attire. The meeting closed
around 10:00 just as the snow was beginning to settle but with the
entertainment, food and games everyone enjoyed the last event of
2009 and look forward to next year when we start off with the AGM
on January 21st at 7:30.
